In an online post, the Service Employees International Union lists several workplace 'perks' that have become standard (and law) in some cases. Some advocacy has been sector- and/or country-specific, but the following things now apply to most workplaces - including CPUT.

Did you know that labor unions made the following 26 things possible?

5. Sick leave and other special leave
6. Social Security
7. Minimum wage
8. Anti-discrimination laws (age, sex, race, disability, etc.)

11. Child labor laws
12. Occupational Safety & Health (and associated Acts)
13. 40-hour work week
14. Workers’ compensation (Compensation for Occupational Injuries and Diseases Act)
15. Unemployment insurance
16. Pensions
17. Workplace safety standards and regulations
18. Employer health care insurance
19. Collective bargaining rights for employees
20. Wrongful termination laws
21. Whistleblower protection
22. Compensation increases and evaluations (i.e. raises)
23. Sexual harassment laws
24. Privacy rights
25. The right to strike
26. Public education for children (global)
